Charlie Chaplin’s “Circus” with circus skills workshop from Frome’s Circus Stars
February 13 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm£4 - £8
Charlie Chaplin’s 1928 film won him an Oscar and is a brilliant slapstick comedy of a tramp who escapes to a circus only to get into all sorts of trouble. Charlie Chaplin wrote and directed the film, and it was a difficult experience for him – a studio fire, death of his mother, bitter divorce from his second wife, and the IRS claiming back taxes – but out of this pain came an hour long gem of a film, funny and poignant (like all the best movies) – and a sell out success.
We love this film because it has all the elements that children love – banana skin comedy, pie-in-face laughs, kicking horses, ducks, piglets and monkeys that create chaos with Charlie Chaplin as a centrifugal force.
Frome’s Circus Stars will workshop circus skills before the main feature, including tightrope walking, juggling, and ball walking suitable for children aged 3-13. These activities will be in the Jowett Hall first (we will have a circus performer in the car park to show you the way).
Circus Stars is run by the wonderful Flora Alwen. Flora worked as a Circus Performer for over 10 years, specialising in in aerial acts (silks, corde lisse, hoop, static and swinging trapeze) Her company ‘La Seda’ provided aerial acts for events nationally and internationally, including (Royal Albert Hall) London, Monte Carlo, Rome, Paris, and Toronto. Teaching experience includes general circus workshops and aerial classes for children, adults and young people, alongside fitness based dance, stretching and conditioning classes.
As one mum said to us at an event last year “I can’t get my children to watch a silent, black and white movie at home – but with a circus workshop beforehand they then just flop in front of the big screen – and love it!”
Port Regis School, set in the the beautiful parkland of Motcombe Park near Shaftesbury, is kindly hosting this for us in their stunning Farington Music School which offers wonderful acoustics for musical and dramatic performances. We are grateful to Port Regis, and we will be making a contribution from the proceeds of this event to the Port Regis nominated charity, Farms for City Children.
Refreshments will be available (no nuts), and we will following Blue Planet guidelines for plastic use.
Places are limited so book early to avoid disappointment. Children on free school meals and their carers are welcome to this screen event for free, provided you e mail us to confirm by e mail firstname.lastname@example.org
